Two gunmen suspected to be militants were killed during
an attack on a patrol van of the Bayelsa State special police squad,
codenamed, Operation Doo-Akpo, The Nation reports.
It was also gathered that a policeman lost his life in a gun duel that followed the attack.
The nation also reports that in a separate incident, gunmen operating on a speedboat kidnapped four employees of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC).
The two incidents were said to have occurred on Monday in Nembe and Southern Ijaw local government areas of Bayelsa State.
The attack that led to the death of the policeman was said to have happened at about 5pm in Opiama, Nembe local government area of the state.
The slain policeman, a sergeant, was identified as Mathew Simon, was said to have been hit by the suspected militants bullets.
The Nation also reported that the patrol van was drafted to guard workers constructing the Ogbia-Nembe road.
Though the missions of the suspected militants were not clear, a security source close to the Nation hinted that they must have arrived the area to abduct some of the workers.
It will be recalled that Niger Delta militants announced that there will be consequences if President Jonathan fails to win the 2015 general elections.
